Kumbha Vivah is a traditional Hindu ritual performed primarily to ward off the ‘Manglik Dosha’ or widowhood yoga (yoga of untimely death of husband) in the horoscope of women. In this, the woman is symbolically married to an earthen pot (Kumbha).
How does this work?
- First Marriage: In this ritual, the girl is married to a pitcher or an idol of Lord Vishnu with complete Vedic rituals (pheras, kanyadaan etc.).
- Dosha Nivaran: Symbolically, the pot becomes the girl’s first husband. Since the pot is an inanimate object, that marriage is considered null and void, thereby removing all the doshas from the person’s actual marriage.
- Immersion: At the end of the puja and marriage, the pot or Vishnu idol is immersed in a holy river or water body.
